Singing Contest is a Classic!

Congratulations to Nick Nagurski (ND '01) who won this contest. Thanks to all who entered!

“Can you dig it?”

As part of “a real celebration” of the success of Notre Dame's Spirit of Notre Dame campaign, a special two-disc CD collection is being created, and you now have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become the “lead singer” performing a classic song of celebration made famous by the rock band Chicago -- but with new Notre Dame lyrics!

All you have to do is sing that classic song by the rock band CHICAGO, Saturday in the Park, re-imagined as a Saturday at Notre Dame!  Just a walk in the park, right?

The O’Neill Brothers are lending their musical talents to producing the two CD collection, which will feature 30 songs for and in many instances performed by the Notre Dame family (even Regis Philbin sang a song for this collection!).  Tim O’Neill ’94 and his brother Ryan O’Neill ’97, both graduates of Notre Dame, perform together as the O’Neill Brothers.  They have released more than 35 CDs of piano music, including A Notre Dame Experience and Here Come the Irish.

If you know a musical Domer with a great singing voice, please have them follow the audition guidelines below. (The deadline is 5/31/11.)

Audition Guidelines:

1.) Download any instrumental/karaoke version of Saturday in the Park by Chicago in the original key of C.

2.) So as not to give away the new Notre Dame lyrics that The O'Neill Brothers have written, please record your voice singing the original lyrics to the song.

(Or, if you'd like to take a try at writing and singing your own creative Notre Dame lyrics to the song - go for it!)

3.) Email you singing the lyrics to the instrumental track to tim@pianobrothers.com before 5/31/11.

The winner will be announced on June 3rd and will be singing to the actual backing track by the band Chicago as a song on the largest musical project in Notre Dame history!

It's Official - Calling All Musical Domers - Big Opportunity!

Do you know a Notre Dame alum, student or faculty member that has recorded any type of music? We are producing two new CDs for Notre Dame of other Domers' music and we want to hear ALL types of music so please spread the word!

Whether vocal or instrumental, mellow acoustic guitar, full out rock-n-roll or hip hop, we want to hear it all!

The Opportunity
Over the next 12 months, we will be producing two CDs: one of relaxed, mellow songs and the other of upbeat tailgating-type songs. We will be choosing around 25 songs by Notre Dame students or Alumni and will be paying a licensing fee for each song that we select for the project.  (Four $500 cash prizes will be offered to current students whose songs are chosen too!)

Additional Opportunities
Even if you have not already recorded a song, we are going to need songwriters inspired by their time at Notre Dame to help us make this an incredible project. Here are just a few additional opportunities:
(We are hoping that creative Domers will think of even more musical ideas and submit them to us!)

  1. We would love it if someone would write a new potential theme song about Notre Dame. ('Here Comes the Irish' needs a Sequel!) It can be any style, with lyrics or without. We'd love to hear a few new songs of any genre about ANY aspect of Notre Dame.

  2. We would love it if you wrote a song that was inspired about your time at Notre Dame and then also wrote a background story to the song that we can include in the CD jacket. This song would not have to directly reference Notre Dame or something on campus, but if a member of the Notre Dame family member would listen to it, he or she would potentially understand a deeper meaning to the song.

  3. We will be including a few snippets of moving, spoken words (think Fr Ted, Fr Jenkins...and...?? :) !) and will need someone to help score/perform instrumental music to be played under these words. If you know of someone that can do this, please have them contact us.

The Timeline
We will be accepting any songs or CDs submitted to us on or before
Jan 31, 2011 (Student submission deadline is Jan 15, 2011.)  We will then be working on the CDs throughout the early part of 2011 and will release both CDs during the summer of 2011.

How to Submit
Please send any songs or CDs to the address below. Mark your top 2-3 songs that you think are most appropriate for the project and make note of which certain songs were inspired by your experience at Notre Dame. Please share a more in-depth 'behind the song' story if you'd like. (Sorry, url links to songs online will not be considered.)
